A brief history

The Department of General Chemistry (present name) was organized with the foundation of the Chisinau State Medical Institute in 1945 and at that time, its name was The Department of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry. Within this department worked only three employees – Boris Leonov, PhD in chemistry, lecturer, the first head of the department and lecturers Abram Derji and Ana Ivlev. In 1967 because of the Faculty of Pharmacy formation a new department of chemistry was created called Organic and Physcolloidal Chemistry, headed by the lecturer V. Ivanov. In 1968, the lecturer Abram Derji was elected as the head of The Department of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry. In the years of 1975-1976 the head of the department was the doctor in chemistry, lecturer Boris Bovichin then until 1979 the doctor in chemistry Dr.Grigore Junghietu. In 1980 by Rector order the lecturer Nelli Negreata was named the head of the department. She served in that position until 1985. In addition, during this year as head of the department was chosen through a contest the doctor in chemistry Iacob Tighineanu (re-elected to this posture also in 1990, 1995 and 2001). In 1982, under the new curriculum, the two chemistry departments were reorganized in bioinorganic and biophysical chemistry department headed by Professor Ia. Tighineanu, and bioorganic and physcolloidal chemistry department directed by lecturer V. Ivanov, who functioned in that capacity until 1986. In 1987 succeeding the merging of the two departments of chemistry a single chair was founded, called General Chemistry and Bioorganic who met all the chemical disciplines of the former State Medical Institute of Chisinau. Since 2007, the head of the department of chemistry is the lecturer C. Cheptanaru chosen through a contest in 2008 and re-elected in 2013. In the department of chemistry were sustained 16 PhD theses in Chemistry (Abram Derji, Ion Furtuna, Iacob Tighineanu, Ion Santevoi, Grigore Budu, Vasile Sarbu, Vasile Ivanov, LiubaDanilin, Nelli Negreata, Loghin Chistruga, Vasile Oprea, Constantin Cheptănaru, Silvia Melnic, Pavel Globa) and a thesis of doctor habilitate in chemistry (IacobTighineanu). Currently at the department of general chemistry are studied the following chemical subjects: Bioorganic Chemistry – for first year students of the general medicine, public health and dentistry faculties; General and inorganic chemistry – for first year students of the pharmacy faculty; Analytical Chemistry – for second year students of the pharmacy faculty; Organic Chemistry – for second year students of the pharmacy faculty; Physical Chemistry – for second year students of the pharmacy faculty; Colloidal chemistry – for second year students of the pharmacy faculty; Physicochemical methods of analysis – for third year students of the pharmacy faculty.
